Spanish Peaks Pipeline History

What is now known as the Spanish Peaks Pipeline was originally built as part of the Spanish Peaks Gathering System. The pipeline was built in 1984 by HBB Inc and Industrial Gas Services to gather and transport gas from natural gas wells near La Veta. For a short time the pipeline supplied gas to the City of Walsenburg.

The pipeline had several owners over the following years, being purchased by Petroglyph Energy Inc in 1997. Petroglyph developed new wells in the area, which have since been abandoned and reclaimed. The pipeline was operated at minimal capacity during Petroglyph's ownership, ultimately being taken out of active service.

The pipeline was purchased by SPG Holdings LLC at the end of 2018. SPG intends to refurbish the line and place it back into service. Possibly providing natural gas service to customers along the pipeline route.

The pipeline is connected to the City of Walsenburg's High Pressure Supply line on the east end and terminates near the original well sites southwest of La Veta on the west end. For much of its length, the pipeline more or less follows the San Isabel Electric Association's power transmission line. The pipeline is located in private right-of-way along most of its route. The right-of-way was purchased from the adjacent landowners at the time of installation. The line is located in a dedicated Pipeline Easement where it crosses portions of the River Ranch subdivision.

The pipeline consists of about 22 miles of six (6) inch diameter steel pipe and about 1 mile of three (3) inch diameter polyethylene plastic pipe on the west end. The steel pipe is coated with a green fusion bonded epoxy protective coating.

tapThere are several above ground facilities installed along the pipeline route, including a meter station near the east end, taps and valves at various locations, and a rectifier and block valves towards the west end. The rectifier is used to provide cathodic protection for the pipeline, which prevents corrosion damage.

Neither the original wells, the wells developed by Petroglyph, or the individual gathering lines once connected to these wells, are connected to, or a part of, the Spanish Peaks Pipeline. Nor are any of these facilities in anyway associated with SPG Holdings LLC.
